It is not that he    is afraid of acquiring help, or wants to be independent and do it all on his own, but it has more to do with not wanting to  chafe anybody else, or make them feel inferior. Servants were a symbol of  inequality and exploitation, and I didnt need one   He feels  pestilential for  victimisation her, but as he realizes why Celia  needfully the job, he accepts her, but do not ask  frequently of her. He still cooks his own meals.

 This shows that he cares for other  lot and their well-being.
